PARIS-TOKYO
SEPTEMBER 2024
A collaboration between J.M. Weston and sacai.
Tokyo is 9,712 km from Paris as the crow flies. It currently takes 13.5 hours to fly from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport to Tokyo Narita.
You could also spend 162 hours driving, exploring the widely varied scenery of a long and surprising route. On the velvet seat of a train, you'd probably have to go through China before getting to the island. I have a friend who spent a whole month travelling to the capital of Japan on two boats. On foot, including a ferry, the journey takes 2,789 hours and no less than 18,067,000 steps on average.
To meet Chitose Abe, founder and creator of sacai, we began with a kind email. With natural enthusiasm, shared values and openness, the creators of avant-garde clothing and the historic J.M. Weston brand met.
sacai is the flag holder of a modern wardrobe, where the great classics come together with ease. Chitose Abe makes a statement on wardrobe essentials by destructuring them at will.
With the same attention to detail as J.M. Weston's own craftsmanship, we are proud of how she has enhanced and elevated two of the shoe industry's greatest icons, the Golf derby and the Worker lace-up boot, giving them a new foundation as a model for years to come. In black box calfskin, beachnut nubuck and leopard-print cowhide, the resulting collection enriches J.M. Weston's usual vocabulary, while coordinating with our tradition.
More than a collaboration, this new relationship unites J.M. Weston and sacai, and I'd like to think that it can be replicated. It’s like those true artistic friendships, where mutual admiration is the best way forward! !
